Russian is one of the top ten most-used languages. It is the language of the largest country in the world and is one of the most useful languages for business. Our Russian minors come from a variety of majors. There are many reasons to study Russian.
The Russian Minor will help you to develop speaking, writing, listening, and reading skills in Russian and will increase your knowledge of the Russian culture. See below for our Russian minor requirements, classes, and resources.
Russian Minor Requirements
Complete all lower-division course work (all 1000- and 2000-level classes) or its equivalent in Russian, followed by 6 hours of upper-division credit in courses taught in Russian. You will need a GPA of 2.5 in Russian with no grade below “C” in all upper-division Russian courses to receive the minor.

RUSS 1713 - Elementary Russian I
Understanding, speaking, reading, and writing. Method of instruction is audio-lingual. Not for native speakers per University Academic Regulation 4.9. Previously offered as RUSS 1115.
RUSS 1813 - Elementary Russian II
Continuation of RUSS 1713. Not for native speakers per University Academic Regulation 4.9. Previously offered as RUSS 1225. Prerequisite(s): RUSS 1713 or equivalent proficiency.
RUSS 2713 - Intermediate Russian I
Russian grammar, composition and conversation. Not for native speakers per University Academic Regulation 4.9. Previously offered as RUSS 2115. Prerequisite(s): RUSS 1813 or equivalent proficiency.
RUSS 2813 - Intermediate Russian II

RUSS 3113 - Russian Conversation
Development of conversational skills in formal and informal Russian language; study of oral communication and idioms; vocabulary enhancement. Prerequisite(s): RUSS 2813 or equivalent proficiency.

Art, literature, music, architecture, and contemporary life of Russia. Course taught in English.
RUSS 3223 - Russian Composition
The development of all forms of written communication in Russian through practice in writing compositions, letters, reports, and other documents in Russian. Prerequisite(s): RUSS 2813 or equivalent proficiency.
RUSS 4013 - Survey of Russian Literature I
Survey of Russian literature from its beginning to late nineteenth century with readings in Russian of representative texts. Course conducted in Russian. Prerequisite(s): 20 hours of Russian or equivalent proficiency.
RUSS 4023 - Survey of Russian Literature II
Survey of Russian literature from late nineteenth century to post-Soviet era with readings in Russian of representative texts. Course conducted in Russian. Prerequisite(s): 20 hours of Russian or equivalent proficiency.
RUSS 4113 - Russian Literature in Translation I (H)
Russian literature from its beginning to mid-19th century: Pushkin, Lermontov, Goncharov, Gogol, Turgenev, and Dostoevsky. Readings in English. Classes conducted in English.
RUSS 4123 - Russian Literature in Translation II
Russian and Soviet literature from mid-19th century to present: Tolstoy, Chekhov, Gorky, Zamiatin, Sholokhov, Pasternak, Bunin, Solzhenitsyn, Arzhak (Daniel), Tertz (Sinyavsky), Voznesensky, and Evtushenko. Readings in English. Classes conducted in English.
RUSS 4223 - Russian Reading Skills
Acquisition of skills in vocabulary enrichment, stylistic analysis and advanced proficiency in reading various styles of contemporary written Russian (newspaper, political, business). Prerequisite(s): 20 hours of Russian or equivalent proficiency.
Russian Resources
- The Language Lab is located in 207 Gundersen and is open Monday-Friday from 8:00am-12:00pm and 1:00pm-5:00pm. In it there are computers that you can use to complete your assignments. You can also check out DVDs in Russian with your student ID by going to the office in 206 Gundersen.
- Tune In Radio allows you to listen to live radio stations from all over the world on your computer or on the app for your mobile device for free.
- Mango. As an OSU student, you have access to Mango for free (OSU login required). Mango is a program that you can use on your computer or you can download the app for your mobile device to learn a language and keep up on your language skills.
- Duolingo allows you to practice Russian for free and is available on your computer and is available as an app for your mobile device.
- Word Reference has Russian-English and English-Russian dictionaries for your computer or mobile device.
