Japan has the third largest economy in the world and Japanese is one of the most useful business languages. There are many benefits to learning Japanese! Several of our students who have declared a Japanese Minor are majoring in business or engineering. There are many reasons to learn Japanese. Our students often choose to study abroad in Japan to further develop their language skills.
The Japanese Minor will help you to develop speaking, writing, listening, and reading skills in Japanese and will increase your knowledge of the Japanese culture. See below for our Japanese minor requirements, classes, and resources.
Japanese Minor Requirements
Complete all lower-division course work (all 1000- and 2000-level classes) or its equivalent in Japanese, followed by 6 hours of upper-division credit in courses taught in Japanese (Advanced Japanese Conversation and Readings in Japanese). You will need a GPA of 2.5 in Japanese with no grade below “C” in all upper-division Japanese courses to receive the minor.

JAPN 1713 - Elementary Japanese I
Pronunciation, conversation, grammar and reading. Not for native speakers per University Academic Regulation 4.9. Previously offered as JAPN 1115.
JAPN 1813 - Elementary Japanese II
Reading, the writing system, culture, grammar, conversation. Not for native speakers per University Academic Regulation 4.9. Previously offered as JAPN 1225. Prerequisite(s): JAPN 1713 or equivalent proficiency.
JAPN 2713 - Intermediate Japanese I
Reading, the writing system, culture, grammar, conversation. A continuation of JAPN 1813. Not for native speakers per University Academic Regulation 4.9. Prerequisite(s): JAPN 1813 or equivalent proficiency.
JAPN 2813 - Intermediate Japanese II
Oral and written practice of modem Japanese. A continuation of JAPN 2713. Not for native speakers per University Academic Regulation 4.9. Prerequisite(s): JAPN 2713 or equivalent proficiency.
JAPN 3723 - Advanced Readings in Japanese
Designed to increase facility and naturalness of delivery in dialogue. Development of general oral and aural proficiency. Previously offered as JAPN 3133 and JAPN 4713. Same course as JAPN 4713. Prerequisites: JAPN 2813 or equivalent proficiency.
JAPN 3823 - Advanced Japanese Conversation
Designed to increase facility and naturalness of delivery in dialogue. Development of general oral and aural proficiency. Previously offered as JAPN 3013 and JAPN 4813. Prerequisites: JAPN 2813 or equivalent proficiency.

- The Language Lab is located in 205/207 Gundersen and is open Monday-Friday from 8:00am-12:00pm and 1:00pm-5:00pm. In it there are computers that you can use to complete your assignments. You can also check out DVDs and manga in Japanese with your student ID by going to the office in 206 Gundersen.

- Kanji Wanikani will help you learn kanji.
- Tune In Radio allows you to listen to live radio stations from Japan for free. It is available for your computer or as an app for your mobile device. Just search for a station by location to find the stations from Japan.
- Mango. As an OSU student, you have access to Mango for free (OSU sign-in required). Mango is a program that you can use on your computer or you can download the app for your mobile device to learn Japanese and keep up on your language skills.
- Word Reference has Japanese-English and English-Japanese dictionaries. It is available for your computer or as an app for your mobile device.
