Chinese is the number one most-used language in the world. China has the world's second-largest economy and is one of the most useful languages for business. Many of our students who minor in Chinese are business majors. There are many reasons to learn Chinese.
The Chinese Minor will help you to develop speaking, writing, listening, and reading skills in Chinese and will increase your knowledge of the Chinese culture. See below for our Chinese minor requirements, classes, and resources.
Chinese Minor Requirements
Complete all lower-division course work (all 1000- and 2000-level classes) or its equivalent in Chinese, followed by 6 hours of upper-division credit in courses taught in Chinese. You will need a GPA of 2.5 in Chinese with no grade below “C” in all upper-division Chinese courses to receive the minor.

CHIN 1713 - Elementary Chinese I
Basic introduction to spoken Mandarin Chinese and Chinese characters. Training in pronunciation, conversation, grammar and reading. Not for native speakers per University Academic Regulation 4.9. Previously offered as CHIN 1115.
CHIN 1813 - Elementary Chinese II
Continuation of CHIN 1713. Mastery of the basic grammatical patterns and conversational principles, and increasing repertory of Chinese characters. Not for native speakers per University Academic Regulation 4.9. Previously offered as CHIN 1225. Prerequisite(s): CHIN 1713 or equivalent proficiency.
CHIN 2713 - Intermediate Chinese I
A continuation of CHIN 1813. Emphasis on fluency in spoken Mandarin Chinese, structures of greater complexity, a greater repertory of characters and vocabulary items, and reading ability. Not for native speakers per University Academic Regulation 4.9. Previously offered as CHIN 2115. Prerequisite(s): CHIN 1813 or equivalent proficiency.
CHIN 2813 - Intermediate Chinese II

CHIN 3813 - Chinese Literature in Translation
Development of student competence in reading a wide variety of materials by contemporary Chinese writers. Previously offered as CHIN 4133.
CHIN 4713 - Advanced Readings in Chinese
Development of student competence in reading a wide variety of materials by contemporary Chinese writers. Previously offered as CHIN 3133. Prerequisite(s): CHIN 2813 or equivalent proficiency.
CHIN 4813 - Advanced Chinese Conversation
Development of general oral and aural proficiency. Previously offered as CHIN 3013. Prerequisite(s): CHIN 2813 or equivalent proficiency.
Resources
- The Language Lab is located in Gundersen 205/207 and is open Monday-Friday from 8:00am-12:00pm and 1:00pm-5:00pm. In it there are computers that you can use to complete your assignments. You can also check out DVDs in Chinese with your student ID by going to the office in Gundersen 206.
- Tune In Radio allows you to listen to live radio stations in Chinese from all over the world on your computer or you can download the app for your mobile device.
- Mango. As an OSU student, you have access to Mango for free (OSU login required). Mango is a program that you can use to learn and practice Chinese. It is available for your computer or as an app for your mobile device.
- Word Reference has Chinese-English and English-Chinese dictionaries for your computer or as an app for your mobile device.
